iTalkBB China SIM lets travellers arrange a mainland Chinese phone number at a store in Canada before departure. Registration is completed in-store, and the traveller receives a physical SIM card and number to take to China.
A local number can be useful when a hotel, driver or other local contact needs to call directly. Unlike an internet-only travel data plan, this service includes a mainland number for calls and text messages.
What to bring
Bring one of the accepted forms of identification:
- A Canadian passport
- A US passport
- A Chinese Resident ID card
Also bring the phone intended for the trip. China SIM is a physical card, so the phone needs a usable physical SIM slot. Before flying, decide whether to replace the Canadian SIM for the trip or use a dual-SIM arrangement supported by that phone.
Register at an iTalkBB store in Canada
Use the store locator to find a nearby location and check its hours. The store can arrange the China SIM + Prime App service and complete the SIM's real-name registration using the accepted identification.
The SIM provides the mainland number. Prime App handles US and Canadian calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so travellers can also stay in touch with people back home while in China.
Once registration is complete, the traveller receives the card and number. The number can be shared with local contacts before the trip.
Use the card in mainland China
Insert the China SIM on arrival to use local calls and mobile data. A hotel can call about arrival arrangements, for example. The service also supports receiving SMS messages from mainland China, including verification texts, while back in Canada.
For travellers who only need internet for maps and messaging apps, iTalkBB's travel data SIM or eSIM is a different option; it does not supply standard phone calls or SMS.
