Setting Up a Travel SIM for a Parent Before They Leave Canada

Helen and her adult son David prepare her phone at home in Vancouver

Helen has booked her flight to Hong Kong and arranged to stay with her sister. Before she leaves Vancouver, she asks her son David to help her sort out mobile data. She uses WhatsApp every day; she wants to keep sending photos and voice messages while she’s out visiting friends.

They sit down at her kitchen table with her phone and the trip details. iTalkBB offers both physical travel SIMs and eSIMs. Helen’s phone supports eSIM, so they choose the China–Hong Kong–Macao option, which covers her Hong Kong visit. They open the installation email while her phone is connected to home Wi-Fi.

David displays the QR code on his laptop. Helen follows the instructions on her phone, with him beside her when she wants a second pair of eyes. Installing the eSIM before departure doesn’t use up the travel period: the 30 days begin when it connects to a network at the destination.

They go over how to select the travel eSIM for mobile data on arrival and keep the instructions in her carry-on. Helen tries the settings herself, with time to ask David a question if something isn't clear.

After arriving in Hong Kong and connecting to the local network, Helen sends her sister a WhatsApp update. A few days later, David gets a photo from their lunch: two sisters, a crowded table and a caption telling him he’s missing out.
