A phone without eSIM support can still use a physical iTalkBB Europe Travel Data SIM if it has a compatible slot and is unlocked. With a supported eSIM phone, the plan can be installed digitally instead. Choose according to the phone's SIM options and whether its Canadian line needs to stay available.
Same holiday, different SIM formats
Nora and Ben are preparing for a European holiday from Ottawa. Nora’s phone supports a physical SIM and eSIM together. She keeps her Canadian card in place and installs the travel eSIM at home using the QR code sent by email. Its 30-day period starts when it connects to a destination network.
Ben’s phone has one physical SIM slot and no eSIM support. He chooses the physical Europe Travel Data SIM, replaces his Canadian card on arrival and stores the original in a small labelled case. They both have data for directions, tickets and messaging, without buying a new phone for the trip.
Check the exact phone before ordering
Find the model information in the phone’s settings and compare it with the manufacturer’s specifications for that version. Look for a physical SIM slot, eSIM support and the combinations of lines it can use. Models sold in different markets can differ. Confirm carrier-unlocked status and compatibility with the travel service; an iTalkBB store can help check the actual device.
| Phone setup | A practical choice |
|---|---|
| One compatible SIM slot, no eSIM | Replace the Canadian card with a physical travel SIM; store the original safely |
| Two compatible physical slots with dual-SIM support | Keep the Canadian card and add a physical travel SIM |
| Supported physical SIM and eSIM combination | Keep the Canadian physical card and install a travel eSIM |
| eSIM-only phone | Choose a supported travel eSIM; if the Canadian line is also an eSIM, check support for keeping both lines active |
Choose which line will provide the data
On a dual-SIM phone, select the travel line for mobile data and turn on its data roaming as instructed. Leave data roaming off on the Canadian line. Any Canadian calls or texts through the original line still follow that provider’s roaming terms. Ben’s Canadian card, once removed, cannot receive calls or texts on his phone.
Check each destination against the Europe33 coverage list before ordering. The travel plan provides internet rather than standard calls or SMS. With a suitable card format and the right coverage, Nora and Ben can prepare their data service before leaving Canada and use their messaging apps while away.
