Keeping Your Canadian Phone Number When Moving Abroad

Moving abroad does not have to mean giving up the Canadian mobile number friends and family already know. An eligible existing number can be transferred to the iTalkBB Prime App and used for calls and texts over Wi-Fi or mobile data. People in Canada keep dialling the same number; the service moves from the Canadian SIM into the app.

Maya is moving from Vancouver to London for a two-year job. She plans to get a local mobile service there, but wants her brother and friends in Canada to keep reaching her as usual. She arranges the number transfer while she is still in Canada, with time to try it before departure.

Transfer the number before closing the old service

  1. Use the Prime App product page or an iTalkBB store to ask whether the existing Canadian number can be transferred. The application must come from the number’s owner.
  2. Prepare a recent bill and identification, then complete iTalkBB’s registration and number-transfer form. Match the account details to the current provider’s bill.
  3. Submit the request and keep the current service active until the transfer is complete. A prepaid line also needs to remain active with at least CAD $1 in credit. iTalkBB lists a typical transfer time of three to seven business days, so leave extra time before departure.
  4. Check the transfer emails. If iTalkBB asks for corrected or additional documents, send them as instructed. Once the success email arrives, sign in to Prime over Wi-Fi or mobile data, make a call, receive a call to the Canadian number, and test sending and receiving a text.
  5. After confirming the number works in Prime, check the previous provider’s final bill and any other services remaining on that account.

Use a local connection, with the Canadian number in Prime

At home in London, Maya uses her apartment’s Wi-Fi. When she is out, her local mobile plan supplies data. Prime does not need its own physical SIM, but it does need an internet connection; after the transfer, the old Canadian SIM no longer supplies service for that number.

Her brother can call from his regular phone without downloading Prime. Maya can also call Canadian businesses and service lines through the app. She has a local connection for life in London and her familiar Canadian number for the people and arrangements she still has at home.
