Using a Phone Hotspot During a Client Visit in China

At a client's showroom in China, Toronto retail designer Owen was checking the space for a new display. The drawing on his laptop showed a clear stretch of wall. In front of him, an electrical cabinet occupied part of it.

The manager opened the cabinet door to show how far it swung out, and Owen measured the clearance it needed. Moving the display farther along the wall looked possible, provided it left enough room to get into the stockroom.

He had come to the site to settle details like this before his team finished the design. He took a straight-on photograph, added measurements to the plan on his laptop and marked the cabinet door’s swing. A photograph alone would leave his colleagues guessing at the scale; the marked-up drawing gave them something they could work from.

There was no visitor Wi-Fi in that part of the showroom. Owen connected his laptop to his phone's hotspot, using mobile data from his iTalkBB China SIM. Hotspot sharing works in mainland China, so he could upload the drawing and photos before packing up.

Before sending the files, Owen turned the laptop towards the manager. She checked the proposed position and pointed out where staff usually parked a cart while unpacking stock. He marked that spot on the drawing too.

He uploaded the annotated PDF and photos to the project's shared folder, then checked that the files had arrived. When his colleagues started work in Toronto, they would have the measurements, the cabinet clearance and the space needed for the cart together in one place.
